Marshalltown–Folk Music Concert At The Library
June 9, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
The Marshalltown Public Library is pleased to welcome acclaimed folksinger and autoharp virtuoso Adam Miller for a free concert with folk songs from The Great American Railroad. The event will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 2:00 p.m. in the library’s community meeting rooms.
Miller’s program will explore many of the folk songs about the Great American Railroad. By 1870, there were 250,000 miles of parallel steel rails crisscrossing the USA. By 1920, one out of every 28 Americans worked for the railroad. No wonder people still sing so many songs about trains, hobos, conductors, engineers, and the days of the steam engine.
One of the premier autoharpists in the world, Adam Miller is a renowned American folksinger and natural-born storyteller. An accomplished folklorist, historian, musicologist, and song collector, he has amassed a remarkable repertoire of over 5,000 songs. Miller accompanies his rich, resonant baritone voice with lively finger-picking acoustic guitar and beautiful autoharp melodies. A masterful entertainer who never fails to ge his audience singing along, he has distinguished himself as one of the great interpreters of American folktales and folksongs, and as a performer who appeals to audiences of all ages.
This program is geared toward adults, but would be accessible to kids grade 3 and up.
