State Champions Crowned as Iowa High School Baseball and Softball Seasons Come to a Close

Champions were crowned across Iowa on Friday as the high school baseball and softball seasons came to an end.

In Class 1A softball, Clarksville captured the state championship with a 5-2 victory over Edgewood-Colesburg. Wahlert Catholic claimed the Class 3A title by defeating Williamsburg 13-6, while Waukee Northwest earned the Class 5A championship with a 3-1 win over Ankeny Centennial.

On the baseball diamond, Newman Catholic rolled past Moravia 11-1 to win the Class 1A championship. Pleasantville claimed the Class 2A crown with an 8-1 victory over Durant. Assumption defeated Wahlert Catholic 5-3 to win the Class 3A title, and Indianola rallied to beat Pleasant Valley 9-6 for the Class 4A championship.

In the NBA, LeBron James is headed to Philadelphia after signing a two-year, $8 million contract with the 76ers. Philadelphia has also added Jalen Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics, giving the Sixers another All-Star alongside James.

In Major League Baseball Friday night, the Rockies defeated the Brewers 5-2, the Cubs edged the Pirates 3-2 in 10 innings, the Tigers slipped past the Royals 2-1, the Reds beat the Cardinals 4-2 thanks to Eugenio Suárez’s go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, and the Astros topped the White Sox 9-5.

Area Athletes Set for Iowa Shrine Bowl and IGCA All-Star Games Today

Several area athletes will take part in two of Iowa’s premier all-star events today.

The Iowa Shrine Bowl kicks off at 4 p.m. inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Representing the North Squad are Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Hudson Clark, Grundy Center’s Judd Jirovsky, and Marshalltown’s Jaxson Hinkle. Nevada’s Cedar Smith will suit up for the South Squad.

The Iowa Girls Coaches Association All-Star Softball Games will also be held today at Southeast Polk Junior High School. East Marshall softball coach Jary Hoskey will be inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding coaching career.

East Marshall senior Peyton Grabenbauer will represent the White Team in the all-star games. The day’s schedule begins with the Red Team taking on the White Team at 2 p.m., followed by White versus Blue at 4 p.m., and Black versus Blue at 6 p.m. The annual Home Run Derby is also part of today’s festivities.
