REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SOFTBALL

The postseason came to an end for both West Marshall and East Marshall Tuesday night as each fell in Class 2A regional championship action.

Second-ranked Grand View Christian defeated 14th-ranked West Marshall 12-4. The Trojans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Grand View Christian answered with two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-3 lead. The Thunder then broke the game open in the fourth, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs for a 12-3 advantage. West Marshall added one run in the fifth, but couldn’t mount a comeback. The Trojans close the season with a 23-11 record after reaching their third straight regional final.

Eighth-ranked Wapsie Valley topped East Marshall 8-3. The Mustangs took their only lead in the second inning when Amiya Kluck delivered a two-out, two-run double. Wapsie Valley responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including one on a throwing error, before Taylor Buhr hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to make it 4-2. The Warriors added another run on a bases-loaded walk and put the game away in the fifth on Lola Destival’s three-run homer. East Marshall scored once in the seventh and finishes the year with a 23-10 record.

In Class 1A, second-ranked Clarksville defeated Highland 4-2, while 11th-ranked North Butler upset fifth-ranked Newman Catholic 2-0.

That sets up a Class 1A state tournament quarterfinal between Clarksville and North Butler at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Radio On The Go will have live coverage of the game.
