GCGR Falls to Kuemper in the State Semifinals 2 to 1

GCGR and Kuemper were scoreless after one half. The Rebels had the best opportunity on a header in front of the goal by Erik Knaack but Tim Sibbel made the save. The Knights opened the scoring when Nick Auen scored from the left side of the goal firing it past Josh Cooley. The Rebels would tie the game at one on a deflected ball. Walker Thede headed the ball towards the net that got behind the goalie and a Knight trying to clear the zone put the ball in the side of the net. The difference making goal was scored by Nick Wanninger just two minutes after the Rebels tied the game. Wanninger hit a 30 yard curling shot from the left side of the field into the top right corner of the net. GCGR had one more opportunity with Erik Knaack getting a good look in front of the goal but it was deflected wide. Kuemper held off some late chances to win the game 2 to 1.

GCGR will play in the consolation game for 3rd place vs the Regals of Iowa City Regina at 11:40 Saturday. The Championship game will be contested between defending State Champion Dyersville Beckman and the Knights of Kuemper Catholic.
