State tournament action continues in both softball and baseball.
In Class 1A softball, St. Edmond defeated Remsen St. Mary’s 10-4 to advance to the semifinals against Clarksville. The Gaels won the opener of that matchup 13-12, but Clarksville responded with a 6-5 victory in the winner-take-all game to earn a spot in Friday’s 1A state championship at 2:30. The Indians will face eighth-seeded Edgewood-Colesburg, which upset top-seeded Exira-EHK-Audubon 5-0. It was the second time this tournament the Vikings knocked off the number-one seed.
In Class 2A, top-ranked Grand View Christian completed an impressive run through the loser’s bracket to reach the championship. The Thunder had to beat Regina Catholic twice, winning the first game 11-8 before taking the second 4-2. Grand View Christian will meet Wapsie Valley, which defeated Logan-Magnolia 5-1, in tonight’s 2A title game at 5 o’clock.
In Class 5A, top-seeded Waukee Northwest blanked Dallas Center-Grimes 4-0 to advance to Friday night’s championship game. The Wolves will take on second-seeded Ankeny Centennial, which beat Southeast Polk 10-3. First pitch is set for 7:30 Friday evening. The two teams split a doubleheader back on June 25, with Waukee Northwest winning the opener 7-3 before Centennial claimed the nightcap 9-7.
Over to the State Baseball Tournament, where eighth-seeded Moravia is headed to the Class 1A championship game after defeating North Linn 5-2 in the semifinals. Awaiting the Mohawks is Newman Catholic, which advanced with a 10-6 victory over South Winneshiek. The Class 1A state championship game is scheduled for Friday at noon.
