Area softball and baseball teams turned in several impressive performances Thursday night, highlighted by a sweep for Marshalltown softball and a first-place clinching win for Grundy Center baseball.

In softball, Marshalltown shut out Des Moines East 5-0 before completing the doubleheader sweep with a 4-2 victory. Ninth-ranked East Marshall rolled past Nevada 11-0, while West Marshall blanked Greene County 8-0. AGWSR defeated South Hardin 8-4, and Iowa Falls-Alden edged Hampton-Dumont-CAL 10-9 in nine innings. Dike-New Hartford slipped past Grundy Center 3-2. South Tama endured a difficult evening, falling to Solon 18-1 and 19-1.

On the baseball diamond, Des Moines East swept Marshalltown by scores of 12-9 and 11-3. East Marshall cruised past Gladbrook-Reinbeck 13-3 in five innings, while West Marshall topped Greene County 11-3. North Tama defeated Dunkerton 12-2, and South Hardin handled AGWSR 11-2.

The night’s headline came from sixth-ranked Grundy Center, which blanked Dike-New Hartford 11-0. With the victory, the Spartans moved into sole possession of first place in the NICL standings. Elsewhere, Oelwein edged Aplington-Parkersburg 4-3, and Benton Community overwhelmed South Tama 36-0.

High school baseball and softball teams from across the area are back in action tonight with several key conference matchups on the schedule.

In baseball, Marshalltown hosts East Marshall at 7 p.m. Fans can listen live on 92.9 FM or watch online at KDAO.com. Other area games include Gladbrook-Reinbeck at Oelwein, Grundy Center at Union, AGWSR at Hudson, South Hardin at Woodward-Granger, Dike-New Hartford at Vinton-Shellsburg, South Tama at Okoboji, BCLUW hosting Colo-NESCO, Nevada hosting Greene County, Collins-Maxwell hosting Baxter, and GMG traveling to North Tama.

On the softball diamond, Iowa Falls-Alden visits South Hardin, while AGWSR faces a tough road test against second-ranked Newman Catholic in Class 1A. BCLUW hosts Colo-NESCO, with live video coverage beginning at 6 p.m. on KDAO.com. Additional games feature Nevada hosting Greene County, Collins-Maxwell hosting Baxter, and GMG taking on North Tama.
