SPORTS UPDATE

High school softball and baseball teams were in tournament action over the weekend with several area squads posting strong performances.

In softball, Grundy Center went undefeated at the Hudson Tournament, finishing 3-and-0. The Spartans opened with a 19-to-0 victory over Janesville, followed with a 6-to-1 win over Dunkerton, and closed the day with an 11-to-0 shutout of Nashua-Plainfield.

At the Iowa Falls-Alden Invitational, Ballard defeated South Hardin 11-to-0, while host Iowa Falls-Alden topped South Hardin 9-to-2. Ogden also picked up a 13-to-1 win over Iowa Falls-Alden.

At the BGM Invitational, Cardinal defeated GMG 9-to-5, while BGM edged GMG 2-to-0.

In high school baseball, South Hardin opened the Iowa Falls-Alden Tournament with a 12-to-0 five-inning win over Charles City. Dike-New Hartford defeated Iowa Falls-Alden 9-to-5, while the Cadets bounced back with a 10-to-7 victory over Charles City. In that game, Raine Pitre set a new Iowa Falls-Alden school record by blasting three home runs.

South Hardin also rallied for one of the tournament’s most dramatic victories. Dike-New Hartford took a 7-to-4 lead in the fifth inning on a grand slam, but the Tigers answered with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to complete an 8-to-7 comeback win.

At the Wayne Bergstrom Invitational in Clarion, Aplington-Parkersburg earned a pair of victories, defeating Clarion-Goldfield-Dows 8-to-7 and Southeast Valley 9-to-4.
