REGIONAL SEMIFINAL GIRLS SOCCER

GCGR is headed to the Regional Final after knocking off eighth-ranked Colfax-Mingo 3-1 in a Class 1A Regional Semifinal Tuesday night.

The match was tied at one with under five minutes remaining when GCGR’s Prycely Beard was taken down in the penalty box by Colfax-Mingo goalkeeper Emmalyn Buchman. The foul resulted in a penalty kick, and Buchman was shown a yellow card.

After an extended delay and some confusion surrounding the play, Sydney Veasman moved into goal for the Tigerhawks to face the penalty attempt. GCGR’s Karina Arvisu Ersland stepped up and buried the shot into the bottom right corner of the net, giving the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

GCGR added insurance with just over a minute left in regulation when Arvisu Ersland scored again, completing a hat trick and sealing the 3-1 upset victory.

The win sends GCGR into Thursday night’s Regional Final, where the Rebels will travel to face 12th-ranked Iowa Falls-Alden. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
