The Iowa Girls State Soccer Tournament is down to the final four in Class 1A after quarterfinal action Monday in Ames.

Top-seeded Denver rolled past eighth-seeded Iowa Falls-Alden 8-1, while seventh-seeded Aplington-Parkersburg pulled off the upset of the day, knocking out second-seeded Davenport Assumption 1-0 in overtime. Third-seeded Hudson edged Treynor 1-0, and fourth-seeded Council Bluffs St. Albert defeated fifth-seeded Des Moines Christian 4-2.

The state semifinals are set for Thursday, with Denver facing St. Albert at noon on Field 1, Aplington-Parkersburg and Hudson at 12:15 on Field 2

On the softball diamond, Marshalltown picked up a sweep over Des Moines Lincoln, winning 4-3 and 6-1. Ninth-ranked West Marshall held off Nevada 5-4, while BCLUW defeated Riceville 4-1. Top-ranked Clarksville cruised past Colo-NESCO 18-1, and Don Bosco topped 12th-ranked Collins-Maxwell 14-4.

Other area winners included Rockford over GMG 4-0, fourth-ranked Wapsie Valley over Grundy Center 7-2, Dunkerton over North Tama 8-4, Iowa Falls-Alden over Humboldt 4-2, and Columbus Catholic over Dike-New Hartford 5-3. Top-ranked Williamsburg dominated South Tama with wins of 11-0 and 12-0.

In baseball, Des Moines Lincoln swept Marshalltown 7-3 and 17-8. Fourth-ranked Grundy Center beat Wapsie Valley 7-1, AGWSR outlasted Gladbrook-Reinbeck 6-4 in eight innings, and Riceville defeated BCLUW 8-4.

Aplington-Parkersburg earned a 5-3 win over East Marshall, Don Bosco edged Collins-Maxwell 4-3, and West Marshall and Nevada split a doubleheader. Clarksville defeated Colo-NESCO 7-4, Rockford beat GMG 7-5, Humboldt blanked Iowa Falls-Alden 10-0, Dike-New Hartford topped Columbus Catholic 13-2, and Williamsburg rolled past South Tama 19-0.

Today’s local sports scene is highlighted by Marshalltown hosting the Iowa State Coed Tennis Tournament, with two Marshalltown doubles teams competing for state honors.

The city is also hosting the State Coed Golf Meet for Class 1A and 2A schools at the American Legion Golf Course. Area schools represented include West Marshall, Grundy Center, and South Hardin. Class 3A and 4A competition is being held in Newton, where Marshalltown also has qualifiers competing.

Tonight’s softball schedule features ninth-ranked West Marshall hosting 12th-ranked Grand View Christian, Nevada traveling to Roland-Story, South Tama visiting GMG, and fifth-ranked East Marshall hosting Iowa Valley.

In baseball, Nevada travels to Dike-New Hartford, Gladbrook-Reinbeck visits GMG, and Aplington-Parkersburg heads to Anamosa.

South Hardin is scheduled for both baseball and softball at Oelwein, with first pitch at 5 p.m. because Oelwein is also hosting Sumner-Fredericksburg later this evening. Iowa Falls-Alden travels to AGWSR in another area matchup.
