District Final Baseball
Grundy Center is headed to the Class 2A Substate Final after a dramatic 3-1 victory over West Marshall in 10 innings Friday night. Pete Lebo was the hero, blasting a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the Spartans to the next round. Grundy Center improves to 18-4 on the season and remains one win away from a trip to the state tournament.
In other district championship games, Ankeny Christian defeated AGWSR 9-2, Lynnville-Sully rolled past Baxter 11-1, Ridge View topped Kuemper Catholic 9-5, and St. Ansgar shut out North Butler 2-0.
The Class 2A Substate Final is set for Tuesday night as Grundy Center (18-4) takes on Ridge View (21-4) at 7 p.m. at Boone High School. The Spartans are looking to earn their first state tournament berth since 2021.
Regional Semifinal Softball
In Class 3A regional semifinal action, fourth-ranked Mount Vernon defeated Dike-New Hartford 7-0 to advance to the regional final.
